My grandmother would occasionally send me a little money while I was in college with a note saying she was sending me a little mad money. I’ve been wanting to get a charm like these for my charm necklace to remember her by.

I think it would be cool to do a modern version that you make it into a card that they could tap the charm to pay for something

It’s so significant historically but is also makes today’s value of money feel like a joke because a dollar gets you maybe a singular piece of candy at a dollar store… (this is in no way an attack on the jewelry but it is towards our government and the value of the dollar in the US today.)

My great grandma used to tell me to always keep mad money and when I got married she told me “in the arguments that don’t matter too much but are high emotions, go spend some mad money on whatever will make you happy and he will just have to deal with it”. She was married for 36 years. So cool to see the jewelry attached to this saying!

no way, I've seen so many of these in antique centres (UK) and never knew what they were, I always thought they were quite random as they do have $1 or $5 bills in them. I'll keep my eye out for them next time I go!

Im from the Caribbean and we still say that. If you're going out or on a date, you're supposed to have emergency money to get home. We call it "Vex Money" as in, if you get vex (angry), you can go home without help. I never knew this was an established thing in that era.

My mother had a heavily laden charm bracelet she wore all throughout the 80s and 90s, and one of them was a mad money charm! It didn’t have a hammer but it did say “in case of emergency, break glass”. I spent a lot of time as a small child trying to pry the dollar out 😂😂

I use the term mad money for money that hasn’t been budgeted I can do whatever I want with. I didn’t know the history that’s fun!

I'm glad it opens so you don't really have to break the glass in case of an emergency!

My grandma used to tell me to shush and slide a couple dollars across the table and this made me realize, she grew up in the 30s so having her own money was special 🥹 miss her
