Over my 40 years as a Civil Engineer, I came to realize that "there is seldom ONE correct answer to a problem but oftentimes multiple acceptable solutions"; and it's our job to find the optimum acceptable solution. I don't think AI is going to replace that kind of creativity, judgment, and experience anytime soon. But it seems like a good idea to have that tool in your toolbox.

Once a stable material is found, 3D printers will replace CNC machines. My company 3D print any castings components to set and verify the set up on machines. We then machine the castings. One of our castings costs £24,000! 3D printing will rule.

Calculators were supposed to have made math redundant. Computers in the 90s were supposed to have made Calculator redundant. Apps in the 2010 and now AI is trying to make engineering redundant, it never will be redundant. But you have to have a very solid foundation in engineering principles, and an understanding of the math. If you wanna even find a job as AI expands, it’s footprint.

Just like anything else, it is a race to the bottom if they have to pay for an employee to come up with a specific scenario for an item or you can tap into something that covers multiple things for a 10th of the price.

100% You need to know what you are looking for. You need to know what you want and which questions to ask. One thing I have found get AI to find the manufacturers manual then ask it to find the answer to the question you are looking for. 👍👍😎

i cant think of a worse industry to integrate gen AI into than engineering. if you use it long enough to code or to fix problems you'll notice it essentially tries to find brute force solutions to everything that is not obvious.

AI got a lot of calculations wrong when I tested it, with simple things, so I use it for research at the moment, but I can not trust it completely at the moment.

I set & program CNC machines. Software will write a program, pallet changers will load the fixtures, robotic arms will load the billets. CMM and robotic arms will check the dimensions. Man will do the final checks for conforming components. Big companies will implement this 1st.

the ai we have now will not replace engineers. but as it advances and as we get more powerful computers it will eventually replace humans indefinitely

Essentially, AI is literally an advanced tool. Waaaaaay back when I was in a small school in upstate New York, there was a class called Mechanics of Materials, a "senior level" class in the engineering curriculum. On the wall above the front chalkboard, there were wooden letters mounted. RTFP. Basically, we were going to become leaders in the military in a couple of months. Our function in life was to Read The Problem=Resolve The Problem. Engineering is RTFP in life.
