@palaciosophy: Fort Pickens was completed in 1834, built by enslaved men, and the irony of that is it became a beacon of freedom during the civil war because this fort is one of the few that remained under union control during the entirety of the civil war. 22 million bricks, gigantic canons that blasted 300 pounders, a history of defense as well as imprisoning Apache, this place has a serious weight to it that you can truly feel walking the 200 year old steps.
