@chronicallyjenni: What we wish you knew about Ehlers Danlos Syndrome & Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder this EDS & HSD awareness month A little reminder that this series is community led. I asked people with EDS & HSD in my stories what they wished others understood about these conditions, then brought those responses together into this “What We Wish You Knew” video. 1. It’s not just being ‘bendy’ EDS and HSD are connective tissue disorders. Connective tissue is basically the glue that holds everything in your body together meaning that EDS & HSD can affect the whole body. Joints, skin, organs, digestion, cardiovascular system and more. They are multisystemic conditions. 2. It looks different for everyone Some people need mobility aids, some don’t, and both are valid. Some people are in constant pain, others experience different symptoms. There are 13 subtypes of EDS, and even within the same diagnosis, no two people are the same. 3. HSD is not ‘less than’ hEDS Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder isn’t a milder or less important version of hEDS. It can be just as painful, just as complex, and just as disabling. The label doesn’t define the impact. 4. Getting diagnosed and supported is difficult and takes a long time. On average, it can take around 10 to 12 years to get a diagnosis. Many people are dismissed, gaslit, or told nothing is wrong. Even after diagnosis, specialist support is limited, and many healthcare professionals still aren’t properly trained on the conditions. 5. It’s painful and exhausting There’s no cure, limited treatment options, and not enough research. It’s often misunderstood, downplayed, or underestimated. And trying to function in a body that feels like it’s constantly struggling to hold itself together is exhausting. What would you add to the list let me know in the comments. And what have you learnt about EDS & HSD this awareness month. Please share this video to continue to help raise awareness. #EhlersDanlosSyndrome #EDS #HSD #EDSAwarenessMonth

Yes it’s a fun party trick being bendy, but I genuinely don’t know what it feels like to not have chronic pain every minute of every day

After 17 years of having my symptoms dismissed, during 2021 I finally found a geneticist and asked to be tested for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. That's when I finally received my diagnosis.
If I hadn't taken the initiative and advocated for myself, I believe I would still be told that I was imagining my symptoms, exaggerating, or that it was all in my head.
Even after finally getting a diagnosis, my journey hasn't become much easier. OK, now they believe me, I have a diagnosis they often struggle to pronounce, so it must be real. 🫣
I still haven't found a healthcare professional in my area with enough knowledge to properly manage my condition. Fortunately, I've learned to manage it myself.
I'm genuinely surprised whenever I meet a doctor who had even heard of EDS. One doctor even admitted that his colleagues would be upset with him if he referred me to them. At least he was honest.

It means local anaesthetic is significantly less effective and wears off much quicker.

No cause my muscles overconsempate eg my hamstrings are so tight no matter how much I stretch, so I’m hyper mobile but can’t even do anything cool just got the bad parts. I used to be a dancer and always wished I was flexible, and I was in some parts like my hips and knees and ankles but I can’t do anything cause of my tight muscles

Diagnosed at 16, now 21 and can only work from home, for 4 hours at a time. Using mobility aids makes me feel worse mentally, but helps physically. It’s a lose lose situation for most of us!

Number 3 makes me feel so seen. I recently got diagnosed with HSD and felt like it meant my struggles and pain were invalidated by not getting that hEDS diagnosis. I have 6/9 on the beighton scale but apparently thats no longer enough for a hEDS diagnosis

I genuinely don’t know how anyone with this functions or works a full time job. I am 36, and my entire background is built around physical labor I can no longer do, and fought through too long while being told my labs are fine, until finally receiving a diagnosis this year. It has flipped my life upside down and I have no idea where to even go from here.
