@whileyouwonder: Stimming doesn’t always look like the stereotypes people expect, and many people have no idea that what they’re doing is stimming. A lot of autistic people and ADHDers have repetitive movements, sounds, or sensory habits that help with regulation, focus, comfort, excitement, processing, or releasing tension. Some are obvious, some are tiny, and some are so lifelong you don’t even realise you’re doing them anymore. Research has found that stimming in autistic people is highly varied and often serves an important regulatory function (Nwaordu & Charlton, 2023).
