Before y'all get in the comments hating. This is a J-Tube, not a G-Tube. Can't push em as fast because it's going into the small intestine, not the stomach!

Ty for letting me know. I had to do this in clinical and I asked how fast it should be, because I was scared making the patient uncomfortable and the nurse just told me “it doesn’t matter”

I always push slow, am very mindful of how much, and ALWAYS watch my patients facial expression to make sure they are comfortable. It absolutely matters how fast and how much you push.

So they never taught us this in nursing school but it always just felt right to me to go slowly! you unfortunately do not learn everything in nursing school so its awesome to educate people.

That is true. because it can cause the tube to misplace. It can also cause intestinal irritation.

I am an icu nurse who deals with feeding tubes every day at work and i was today years old when i learned that you push slower in the j tube than the g tube! 😳 I’ve been doing it wrong for years but totally makes sense because stomach is a large reservoir and small intestine isn’t! Thanks for the info🫶🏻

I’m a nursing student. I asked my instructor how fast to push it she said “as fast as the patient is comfortable”. So I always do it slow and double check with my patients how they are feeling as I’m pushing it.

Dietitian here. I always told my interns to remember that the intestine isn’t a reservoir like the stomach!! Slow and steady!!

Yes thank you! I take care of NICU babies and when the feed goes to fast they always throw up and have an upset stomach so it most definitely does matter!!

As a nurse, I always ask my patients if the speed I push is ok for them! Everyone is a little different but slower is better 99% of the time!
