While I love the idea of VE Schwab’s books, and most of her books end up being 3 to 4 stars for me, I feel like the execution of those ideas always falls a little bit flat. I always find myself wishing that she took it just another step or two further.

For me it’s Rachel Gillig.I feel like I should absolutely adore her books based on the aesthetic alone. Any time I have tried to read one of her novels I just don’t really care about what happens next. It’s a shame.

Allison saft is one of mine for sure. a dark and Drowning tide's politics were AWFUL (what do you MEAN it has that ending????)

I only read A Dark and Drowning Tide by Saft and I have to agree with you on the politics point especially, because genuinely what was that ending? Also I REALLY love Ava Reid but gosh, Lady Macbeth was one of my least favorite books of the year it released and Fable wasn’t much better, I’m tentatively hopeful for Innamorata because it sounds like the atmosphere I prefer but I’m definitely keeping my expectations in check

i have the same with ava reid. im trying one last book before giving up, but even this one is just meh. i love their ideas but the execution always falls flat for me. personally i think they’d benefit from sitting with their works longer given the speed they publish.

For me is Ashley Hearing Blake. She just always makes one character so dislikable I end up rooting against the romance, which shouldn’t be happening when reading a romance book.

I'm using The Last Contract of Asako as a deciding point for Fonda Lee. I found Jade City to be criminally boring. I loved The Tethered Sky. I'm hoping The Last Contract of Isako is like The Tethered Sky. I also will not read anything more from Olivie Blake. I don't like her characters or plots.

For me it's VE Schwab. I loved the shades of magic trilogy and Vicious and vengeful. Can't wait for the 3rd book. But I hate everything else by her. I'll always look out for her books, but paying $30 for books that I dnf in the first few chapters is not my thing anymore 😂

Completely agree with Saft and Reid. I haven’t read any Fonda Lee yet, I wonder if I will feel the same way 🫣

Yeah, I dnfed Jade City at like 50%. Glad I didn't continue. Great premise but writing style was meh. World was boring. The characters were not doing anything for me and it was borderline romanticizing organized crime (I was expected something more morally complex). Yeah, no thank you. I will never pick another book by this author.

I really disliked A Dark and Drowning Tide to the point I decided not to read anymore of Allison Saft’s books bc I knew I would disagree with any views presented. I had a weird attachment to Study in Drowning by Ava Reid but when I tried to read their other stuff it just didn’t hit and I think if I reread Study in Drowning I won’t like it anymore lol. I get you completely.

FINALLY someone who isn’t dying for Jade City. All the hype has made me dislike it more tbh. Atmosphere was interesting, which is why I finished Jade City, but would never pick up another book
