I actually interpret the ball as a symbol of your unfulfilled desires. When you fail to fulfill your potential, you directly violate your Dharma (your cosmic purpose and right way of living). Because growth is continuous, you will naturally accumulate more unfulfilled goals along the way, causing this ball of stagnant potential to keep growing larger over time.
