@historywithmegs: Believe it or not, this medieval hall is in the middle of a bustling city centre!⚜️gifted Nestled in the historic streets of York, the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall is one of the best preserved medieval guildhalls in the world.😯 Work began here in 1357, prompted by the formation of a religious fraternity - the Hall was to be a meeting place - somewhere to worship and give charity to the poor. The Hall’s history actually stretches even further back though, as it’s built on the foundations of a Norman mansion house and excavations around the site have of course found artefacts of Viking provenance too. But what about the name? Well, most members of the fraternity were merchants and mercers, and before long they formed a guild! The building’s undercroft was used as a hospital from 1373-1900 - you can still see the medieval wall storage cubbies - next to this you’ll find a beautiful early fifteenth-century chapel that is still in use today!💒 You can also explore the great hall, several anterooms and a governor’s parlour which are all packed with history - there’s some amazing furniture - I was really quite taken with an adorable seventeenth-century high chair!🥹 Incredibly, the site is still owned by the organisation that founded it and besides castles, churches, and barns, it is the largest English building of this age. I would definitely recommend a visit here if you’re in York - the staff are so lovely and helpful, there’s a super audio guide, and the cafe is fab - having a delicious scone (still warm!) in these historic surroundings is really quite magical ❤️ #york #visityork #medievalhistory #medievaltok #medievaltiktok

I hope that the British truly appreciate the preservation of their history. In the U.S., we destroy everything! Once something ages, we knock it down and replace it.
