Welcome back to the grow along! Very exciting week as this week we are planting our peas and broad beans! Remember these are hardy so they can withstand cold temperatures. Here’s how to plant your peas and broad beans. 🫛 PEAS: 🌱 Peas are loved by slugs, so wait til your plants are big, strong and healthy before planting out to give them the best chance of outgrowing slug attacks. Ideally you want 3 or 4 sets of true leaves and a nice strong root system. Harden them off for a week before planting. 🌱 I’m making a wig wam pea support so I am planting them out in their pot clumps (about 4 plants in each clump, which I am keeping together) in a ring, roughly 20cm-30cm between each clump. 🌱 I’m pushing 4 long bamboo canes into the ground near the peas and tying them together at the top to make a wig wam (check height of the pea variety youre growing to make sure the canes are long enough - some peas can be up to 2m tall!). 🌱 Peas like to scramble so it’s best to give them plenty of points of contact for their tendrils to cling to. Tie string around one of the canes, and work your way around the wigwam to create a spiral, tying in as you go to make sure the string doesn’t slip. 🌱 Another way to support peas is with hazel sticks or similar sticks with lots of twigs for the peas to cling to. See my stories for the other structure I’ve made! 🫛 BROAD BEANS: 🌱 Plant them in a 3x3 grid in front of the pea structure. 🌱 Plant them about 20cm apart. Water both in, and check as often as you can for signs of slug damage. If you see slug damage, employ your organic slug measures as needed! #peas #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign #spreadsheets
