@theamericansystem_: #History #historytok #HistoryTime #usa #fyp George Washington is one of the most legendary figures in American history. His leadership during the American Revolutionary War, his decision to retire and give up his power, and his modest take on the presidency make him a legend. How did those in America and in Europe react to his sudden death in 1799?
This feels obvious - but people really do sleep on George Washington as a presidential great. Yes, I know he’s in the top three consistently, but his decision to give up power is such a criminally underrated event without rival. No other president, so far as I’m aware, displayed that kind of character.

I’m surprised but also a little touched to learn that even some British people had a certain respect for him.

It’s hard to imagine what human history would’ve looked like if Washington and Adams weren’t the first two American Presidents. Yes it was a HUGE deal that a word leader willingly stepped down from power and allowed a new administration to take over but not enough credit is given to Adams for setting a precedent just as big or arguably bigger than Washington’s, willingly stepping from power after losing the support of the people, that was one of the largest tests for a young democracy and we are incredibly lucky that Adams, for all his faults and blunders, made sure his defeat showed the country and the world that democracy can work especially when your side loses.
