people who have supportive parents will never understand what it's like and it's such an extremely hard experience to describe

That’s HER boundary. Why is everyone taking it personally?

i think it really depends on how the person lets their parents affect the relationship. a lot of people with homophobic parents end up allowing that discomfort or control to spill into their relationship, whether intentionally or not. like not being able to comfortably be around your partner, avoiding certain situations to protect their parents feelings, or making their partner feel hidden or less acknowledged. etc. i think there’s a difference between having boundaries with homophobic parents and having no boundaries at all. the person with the homophobic parents usually has to put in extra effort to make sure their partner still feels seen, valued, and prioritized. at the same time, the partner without that experience also has to try to understand how difficult and complicated it can be to navigate parents who don’t fully support you. i think both people have responsibilities in that situation. a healthy relationship has a lot of communication AND boundaries, that both need to be respected. hope this perspective helps!

For me it’s not about if my partner has shitty unsupportive parents, it’s about how involved my partner wants to be with them. I have a horrible dad, but I’m no contact. You can’t choose ur family but you can choose your boundaries.

i feel like this is so easy to say but when you’re actually in a relationship with someone who has homophobic parents it takes a very painful and heavy toll that leads to a lot of conflict. your partners parents not approving of you, saying they won’t go to your wedding, and not treating you well is a reasonable dealbreaker imo. we can argue up and down all day that it doesn’t hurt anyone more than the person who has those parents but it still affects your partner… and it’s even worse when your partner refuses to detach from their parents and let’s their parents hold weight over them. it’s very exhausting for both and the sooner everyone accepts this and acknowledges that it comes down to what you’re willing to accept the better. i’ll never judge or think someone is a bad person for having this preference. everyone needs to be more emphatic to BOTH parties!

honestly it would be a deal breaker for me too. if you wanted to part of your parents lives, then i would also be part of their lives. and even if it's just for a holiday or a birthday, that i would have to interact with them and they were blatantly disrespectful towards me or our relationship then i would have to move on.

People are taking personally what someone else said she can or cannot handle. It’s not about your life or your parents as much as it’s about her capacity for care and empathy. It says something about her, not you or your family.

starting beef on someone's boundaries is weird. she doesn't need to be open to anything she doesn't feel comfortable with

it would totally depend on the other person's boundaries with their family and respect for my boundaries. I am not going to Thanksgiving at a home where people hate any part of me.

It’s ok for both sides- you can be sad you’ve been excluded and she’s valid for having a vision of her future and having boundaries.

I think the difference lies between does the person really desire to keep that relationship or not. It’s hard to dedicate yourself to that kind of judgement forever if your partner expects you to also have a relationship with them.
