I think they should base taxes off revenue of the land.. farmers are the ones using the gravel roads they’re ones that are pounding them out hauling over weight loads behind a lot of the reason for road upgrades.. then ya get someone on an acreage driving an suv and they’re paying more taxes then what a few thousand acre farmer is . I like this quite a bit. I'm sure some with money would find loopholes like buying a residence in the RM and not actually living in it, but that might still be acceptable in some cases (another property means more taxes, I guess?) It's an idea worth exploring I'd say. In Manitoba we do a similar thing with school tax credits - you get it back on your primary residence.

The co-op is the same essentially! Over charge on all products. Cover capital expenditure and balance the books the bank the remainder and reinvest!🤷😉😆

Absentee landlords don’t utilize infrastructure. The RM is making more margin off the absentee tax roll than those who live in the RM.

I like it most farmers would agree but they would also have to have a system for some farmers to prove they’re farming their own land to other rms cause lots of farmers own land in multiple rms now I used to farm in 3 different rms

Why 50km? Now your punishing young little guys like me who can’t expand around home. Maybe we should be looking at the bigger issue of why so many decided to not come back to the farm and start there so the communities stop hemorrhaging members and therefore more tax revenue is generated for the community’s. Unfortunately where we farm in Saskatchewan the school is closed, there’s no arena, there’s no restaurant, no store. While it’s a nice little community and the neighbours are great ultimately the town is dying and without massive reform to our ag industry to promote smaller family farms there won’t even be enough people to man the fire trucks to use the extra tax revenue your tax ideas would generate

We have a very similar problem going on here with non ag people buying land at highly inflated prices for recreational purposes. One person or two three four guys buy land together for hunting and most times it’s not even rented back to someone to graze or hay on. Contribute nothing or very little to the local communities but are driving assessments crazy here. I’d like to see it that if you can’t produce a farm income tax statement you should be taxed at a rate double of what you pay
