Bro I have a brand new player in what is officially my now first ever long term campaign (ninth time dming a campaign but the other eight had time constraints for the story) and BRUH WTF IS HE ON??? IS HE OKAY??? Like just what he’s ASKING for hurts much less what I have PLANNED FOR SURPRISE THINGS????? He’s giving me TOO MUCH JUICY ASS STEAK! And told me to make him cry in game. Wait no I told him that. I have outside of game in some circumstances (namely me being so sad and crying he cried because he didn’t wanna see me sad I promise we’re best friends and I don’t actually literally bully him he just cares that much and doesn’t wanna see me sad). Nonetheless I think I’ll be able to do it and it’s getting so much more traumatic the more he gives me. And this could be years away and I’m so damn excited!!! And the other two players are cooking yet and we be building what they want as session 11 is this Friday! So just getting started fr fr

Fun little thing that happened so because I discovered that our character characters were going to a seaside town I’d talk it over with my DM asking could my DND character have like a severe fish allergy just because she was currently on a little arc of maybe I will try new foods cause she has amnesia because her God took all her memories anyway little did I know the DM was also figuring out a little prank that another friend who wasn’t really in the campaign but would occasionally do a little cameo as a joke character playing pranks on us, Anyway the joke character ended up hiding a fish under my characters pillow and that is how the information of my character having a severe fish allergy came to light. It was a really funny moment.

Players have more power on the narrative than they usually think. It's polite to follow what the DM prepared, but that doesn't mean you can't insert scenes. Like maybe the DM planed that when the party arrives at a town, they will receive an invitation from the noble to dinner. That doesn't mean you can't go to the library to research that thing from your background in the meantime, or ask the nice lady from the tavern to accompany you, or go to the stables to try and get the best mount possible.

I’ve been playing Heart, and that has a mechanic I’m going to steal for my other games called “Beats” which basically let your players set things they want to happen to their characters (and in the game they actually level up by completing them!) but those can really help tell the GM what players actually want to do and what scenes they want to see!

I make sure to not add any sexual crimes even in my darkest worlds because most of my friends have stories of stalkers or bad boyfriends, etc and I don't want to risk bringing them back to that. also because the concept makes most of the people I know including myself very uncomfortable
