@mistercandle_: St. Louis experienced the second largest decline of any city in history. At least, not including cities which were destroyed by external powers. St. Louis experienced a combination of segregation and poor management, and it led to a 68% decline in population, and a destroyed and ugly remnant. St. Louis used to be one of the most beautiful cities on Earth, with a bustling population and expansive urban area. So it’s a shame that this happened. People like Gov. Kehoe still try and rob the city—wanting to squeeze every last dime out of it. The decline of STL has led these types to see it as a lost cause, unworthy of fixing, which is why they choose to destroy it for temporary gains. #missouri #americanhistory #stlouis #BlackHistory #urbanplanning

Make Girlies Dumb :
The city will continue to struggle until St. Louis Public Schools becomes a viable option for educating children. Until then, the middle class families will not live there in any sufficient number to reverse the slide.

St. Louis was only ever a boom town because it was the farthest western big city at the time and river based shipping and commerce. Once the river business went extinct so St. Louis went with it. Slow death.

St Louis decline began as the west opened up by train and eventually the automobile. St.L was at it's height when shipping was only done by riverboat. After WW2, it has slipped into decline while it's neighboring counties grew. Why? jobs. Better education. more land. bigger housing opportunities. You can see it by how the roads and highways have taken shape. One road arc after another. This is why St. Louis County is more populated than the County/City of St. Louis. Yep, they are not the same.

I learned about this on PBS. Not in school, not from my many trips to stl…. It is so important that people know the WHY. North stl and east stl didn’t become bad places by accident…

You realize that tornadoes came through and finished st Louis off. We still have a beautiful down town area and the suburbs are great.

ive been all over StL its a beautiful city. last I knew, I still had extended family in north town. The oppressive history there is sad, but also prevalent elsewhere in the times. Im a KC boy but always have lots of love for StL 🩵

yep, they started allowing blacks to live anywhere instead of just north city and all the white people fled to the suburbs where they could continue to live among only whites. that's not the story that's told, instead they say suburbs were built and people fled to them to have more room
