Ok, originally it was because gokus strength shattered his worldview of ranks/castes which didn't sit well with his Napoleon complex, as he was supposed to be the strongest Saiyan, then it was amplified by being defeated on earth (as far as goku I think it's the fact such a "lowly warrior" pushed him so far), after the frieza saga and his humiliation at friezas hands he becomes determined to catch up to and surpass goku because he simply wants to be the strongest, he doesn't want to be at anyone's mercy again, and gokus strength is a reminder that he always could, this persists until gokus death in the cell saga where Vegeta explains that having a rival is the only way he can grow stronger with help, he's not the type to just pull up to master roshi and be like "hey old man, can you teach me the Kamehameha" (the self isolation is also amplified by his guilt for his past), as far as babidi and getting possessed I believe he was attempting to draw out his "old self" to force Goku to fight him for real and give him that chance to beat him in more than a spar

You are a historian so I will put this in terms that speak to your knowledge base. Vegeta is raised on the premise of Aristocracy, and Nobility. He was or a royal family and was raised on the idea that your status (power level) was determined by birth. Goku represents the concept that his royalty and nobility, his pure outlook on the world, that blood and nobility is everything, can be surpassed by a peasant. Goku is an entity that constantly reminds Vegeta that the outlook of life he holds onto, gifted by his dead father and people, may not be correct. That his birthright, is not only not his, but that his way of life itself, may be wrong. In peace time, Vegeta grew to love Bulma, his son, his normal life training rather than being worshiped. He became a commoner in his own eyes, and started to enjoy it, and Goku came back and it reminded him of the outlook he once had. It's a tale of Aristocracy vs Peasantry and hard work.

I Always Took It It Was Goku That Did The Most Damage To His Ego. And I Get The Writing Of Vegeta's Cheap Shot, Never Really Counted That IMO, As His Victory. (Well, Beyond Technicality I Guess.) Because He Even Talks About Goku Could Have Gone SSJ3 At Anytime I Think Later On, And Feels Further Insulted By It. JS.

its because vegeta is a warrior. as in he goes to war. sure, he was defeated by a team effort, but a low class saiyan was the enemy leader. and in the end, it was because of that leader that he lost. somebody Vegeta didnt even think had a right to step in the ring and box with him caused his defeat by pushing him to where he was too weak to even claim victory. epic example of winning the battle but losing the war.

I don't know how it was translated, but Vegeta got that obsession for Goku because Kakarott became a super Saiyan before he could. Goku became a legend of his culture, to then be made aware that Goku was THE hope of earth, a notion headed by Vegeta's wife and son. As Vegeta made his way into the Z-senshi and acknowledge them, though not outwardly, as his people he also had to face the reality that Goku was their leader, and his Royal ass had not come to terms with that.

It's easy, Vegeta was born the strongest baby(Propaganda, because Broly was) and was told his whole childhood he was destined to be the strongest Saiyan, his reality shattered when Goku was a challenge for him, not because he beat him but because he shattered the Aura of invincibility that Vegeta had among the saiyans, Then Goku Achieved super Saiyan, The thing that was Vegetas birthright, the Majin fight was Vegetas catharsis that it's possible to be stronger than Goku, and that it's possible for him to be the strongest, that changed the dynamics of their rivalry, that What Goku Achieved wasn't because Goku was more special than him but because they were both just Saiyans achieving the what was possible
