Bobby Harris and his crew came up playing jazz fusion in Cleveland clubs, but they understood that surviving the 80s meant making bodies move. They signed to Motown in 1980, and on their 3rd album “Keep It Live”, producer Reggie Andrews and legendary drummer Leon "Ndugu" Chancler delivered a track designed from the ground up to start a dance craze. Here's the wild part: Motown didn't want "Let It Whip" as the single. The band's manager Joe Simone bypassed the label and promoted it independently with his own money. The results speak for themselves: the track shot to number 1 for 5 straight weeks, and won the 1982 Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. Cleveland's first Grammy-winning R&B group, made on a song the label tried to bury. 📀 The sound is a perfect snapshot of the transition era. Every time I hear Whip it Makes me think about the time I Wore this Black Mini Dress out To a Place we've never been. And everyone was dancing 💃🏽 except me. The Dress was so tight right around my stomach and my waist I couldn't even move. Lol 😂 I'll never forget that night.
