Have you ever asked yourself: How did the British colonial government know which Mau Mau fighters to arrest… if they didn’t even live with them? In this clip, Sir Evelyn Baring actually explains part of the answer. He admits that the British depended heavily on information coming from Kikuyu themselves. At one point he says: “It is only Kikuyu who can give up information about other Kikuyu…” That statement reveals something important about the Mau Mau war that many people do not fully realize: This was not just a war between Africans and the British. It also became a conflict within the Kikuyu community itself. According to Baring, the colonial government slowly built an organisation called the Home Guard. These were mostly Kikuyu loyalists who sided with the British colonial government against the Mau Mau. Some had always opposed Mau Mau. Others, according to Baring, had initially supported it but later turned against it. The British armed them, organised them, paid them and used their local knowledge to identify Mau Mau fighters and supporters. And they became extremely important in helping the British fight the Mau Mau. By 1954, the Home Guard had grown to more than 25,000 men. They: guarded villages protected detention camps carried out patrols tracked Mau Mau fighters and helped identify suspects within local communities Because they knew the people, the language, the villages, and the terrain… they could identify Mau Mau fighters in ways British soldiers alone could not. The Mau Mau war therefore became deeply personal. Neighbour against neighbour. Family against family. Kikuyu against Kikuyu. Home Guards often viewed Mau Mau fighters as dangerous people destroying the community. Meanwhile, many Mau Mau fighters saw the Home Guards as traitors helping the colonial government crush the struggle for land and freedom. Some Home Guards joined voluntarily. But to be honest, most joined out of fear, pressure, survival, protection, or because they opposed Mau Mau methods. But one thing is clear: Without informers, loyalists, and the Home Guard system, it would have been much harder for the British to track, arrest, and weaken the Mau Mau movement. And in the end, even Dedan Kimathi himself was captured with the help of Home Guards in 1956. #kenyahistory #colonialkenya #kenyacolony #historykenya #historytok #britishcolonialism #maumau
