You don't need to give them a pearl to pass,it's just the easiest way to do so,you need to give them enough items to equal the trade value of a pearl,and the internal trade value of a pearl is 10 spears on the other hand only count for 1 trade value,so giving them 10 spears also let's you pass (this is useful more so for spearmaster campaign,since they can just create the 10 spears needed)

you can tell when scavs are about to attack ^-^ like many things in rainworld they are surprisingly complex and one of the only species with signlanguage. you can see the very first scav tapping the ground wanting payment and keeping track of you the orange one alearted the others of someone entering hence why more came over. the first one kept following wanting payment and after jumping the 'barricade' (that mound they were all crowding on) you can see them point and attack the 'intruder'
