Woahhh holy myth busting, Batman. I had no idea about the cosplay! This was such a great breakdown. Even if her look wasn’t directly inspired by a black woman, I’m still happy she’s getting to be played by black women now (in the Broadway musical, too), especially since black culture is what drove the culture of the era and Esther Jones still influenced the style of performance. You’re so right, Quinta does look just like her, and I’m getting hyped for this project! Thank you for this research!

Honeslty everything I’ve ever seen from the history surrounding Betty Booo is that the creators did the same thing most artists do, which is they based Betty Boop on a ton of actresses and singers they knew. Like they probably took parts of Ester, and parts of Helen, and probably 5-10 other actresses they saw the show of

i've always thought betty was based on MULTIPLE women, not just esther jones, helen kane, or clara bow. i think visually, her look feels very similar to clara bow's look but her act definitely feels inspired by esther jones
