@vanessaframed: I arrived in Germany in 2015 with dreams, and the hope of building a better future. But reality felt very different. Because of the language barrier, I couldn’t work in my career. I started working in a Kita instead, while trying to rebuild my life from zero. Then came the weather. The endless grey skies, the cold, the darkness that seemed to last forever. At first I thought I was just homesick, but over time I realized how deeply it was affecting my mental health. And then COVID happened. The isolation became even heavier. The loneliness became louder. The depressive atmosphere, the lack of sun, being far away from family, feeling stuck professionally… it all started breaking me little by little. People often romanticize moving abroad, but they rarely talk about the grief of losing yourself while trying to survive in a country that never fully feels like home. I survived it. But there were years where I truly forgot what happiness felt like. #LifeAbroad #MovingAbroad #GermanyLife #ExpatLife #LivingInGermany (moving abroad alone, life in germany, germany reality, expat life germany, immigrant struggles, living abroad loneliness, mental health abroad, germany weather depression)

I moved to Germany in 2008 and I am still struggling with the language. I had a lot of problems adapting to the weather, food and people. I completely understand you

the problem is: you take yourself with you. new place, old you - doesn't fix anything.

I did 5 months in switzerland, figured out my life quality is way better in estonia and went back home. No regrets. Still visit to hike in the mountains but the overall life quality there just isn't very good - it's cramped, overpopulated and a bit dirty. No thanks

I have lived in Ukraine, USA, Germany, and Poland. And I gotta say, friends make or break a location, especially a romantic interest. A bad place becomes good when you are in love.

As an Italian in Germany I find things pretty easy to navigate here tbh. Finished uni, started my career here, things going great. Language obviously is important but that’s true for any country you move to. Can’t expect to thrive without putting in the effort of learning the language.

thats the story of whole Europe, every country have different language and challenges. just take it easy, focus on your mental health first, learn the language and start from there. weather is a big factor, so go on vaccations to Spain, Greece with sunshine. it will help u alot, greetings from fellow immigrant from Finland 🇫🇮❤️

As a German, German weather isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s depressing and different shades of grey over the time of 8 to 10 months. Sorry to hear you’re not as happy as you hoped you be ♥️
