I think you’re over-representing how obvious it is that Azure is from another world to Adolin and Shallan. It’s clear that her blade works differently, but being from “somewhere else” isn’t as clear-cut to a character this early in the series as it is to the reader. But she is mainly there to set up things about Nightblood and Zahel, yeah.

It’s been a couple months since I read oathbringer, but wasn’t Azure the captain of the city guard at Kholinar while the highprinces were all at war on the shattered plains, in part because of her (not) shardblade and powers? It’s heavily implied that Kholinar would have fallen to the fused long ago if she weren’t holding the wall. Also, I think Shallan does try to interrogate her for more personal info when they are on the boat with the Honorspren and she effectively shuts her down and says she doesn’t owe her answers.

Absolutely love nuanced Sanderson takes. You’ll notice this problem is elevated to the highest level in The Lost Metal, like 30% of the book is dedicated to world-hopping crossover stuff

I agree completely of how very little Azure served to the narrative, mostly because of how much time is dedicated to her even though she was mostly an easter egg (so far as we know it), unlike Nahel who was integrated more seamlessly to the story and served small but important purpose on Kaladin and Renarin arcs… That being said, as a big Warbreaker fan, I was all giddy to see my baby again and see how far she had come 🥹

🦆🦆🦆 You’re probably gonna hate books 4 and 5 lol, it really goes all in on the interconnected universe, I loved it but I get that it’s a love it or hate it sort of thing. Reading just a single series especially SLA out of the cosmere without reading everything else in the cosmere in roughly release order doesn’t do it any favors either.

🦆🦆🦆. id honestly never thought about it like that, I personally read the stormlight books last. warbreaker was one of my first and favorite. so for me it was similar to seeing your favorite comic book character as a cameo in another movie. I was too happy about warbreaker being included to question anything. that being said I actually agree with your perspective now stepping back.

🦆🦆🦆 I understand the criticism (specially cuz part 4 is just not great in general) My take is that Sanderson probably justifies this by the fact that both Shallan and Adolin just went through a deeply traumatic event and arent really interested in learning this stuff while trying to process their grief and also survive. I wish we couldve explored this more though, Brandon just spends a lot of time in part 4 doing set up for other books which is...necessary i guess but not really good

🦆🦆🦆 I think to call kaladin, adolin and Shallan spectators in Azure's narrative overstates the case in the book by a couple orders of magnitude, but I accept that it is valid to just not like Azure's inclusion because you happen to *know* she has a narrative that you have not experienced yet. I think that moments like this are inherent to the type of storytelling Sanderson is doing in the Cosmere, but I think the parallel is closer to Hawkeye in Thor/the Avengers. You know this character has something more going on with themselves and others in the narrative, but right now they are just passengers to a different plot. I guess I'll end with a question, if Azure was just a disgruntled ex-student of Zahel from Roshar that was also trying to find him, who then got mixed up in the siege of Kholinar, would that really be any different than Azure?
