Our smartphones will go away. The smartphone is not a timeless technology. It was a device built for an internet-first ecosystem. AI is creating a new technological environment, and with it will come new ways of communicating, navigating, searching, and interacting with the world. Whether the winning device is glasses, earbuds, a pendant, or something we have not yet seen is almost beside the point. The form factor will change. And the signals are already here. We can see what smartphone companies and the companies trying to disrupt them are working toward. That gives us a chance to ask better questions now, while these technologies are still taking shape. What would have to be true for an AI-first device to be acceptable from a privacy, surveillance, consent, and data standpoint? What rules, norms, and design choices should shape it before it becomes widespread? The earlier we examine where technology may be heading, the more power we have to influence what gets built and the conditions under which it enters our lives.
