To understand the Crusades you first need to grasp the amount of Islamic atrocities committed in the centuries before the first Crusade up through the Ottoman Empire. The Crusades were defensive campaigns against a genocidal ideology. In modern terms the Crusaders fought against the fascists of their time - against civilization destroying totalitarianism and the right to freedom and prosperity. Without the Crusades and other Christian heroes the very concept of human rights would not exist in the world today!
