On Sunday, October 19, 1986, Nigeria woke up to the shocking news that one of its most prominent journalists had been killed in his own home in Lagos. Dele Giwa, the 39-year-old founding Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch magazine, was assassinated by a parcel bomb at No. 25 Talabi Street, Ikeja. He was reportedly with his colleague, Kayode Soyinka, when the package exploded. Giwa was rushed to the hospital but died from his injuries. Dele Giwa was known for his fearless journalism and investigative reporting. Through Newswatch, he and his colleagues helped establish a new style of journalism in Nigeria that examined the activities of those in power and brought important national issues to public attention. In 1986, Dele Giwa criticized the Babangida government’s SFEM policy, warning that its failure could provoke public anger, a statement that drew the attention of security officials and led to his questioning. Security officials accused Giwa of plotting a socialist revolution, and after a reported phone call from Colonel Halilu Akilu on October 18, a parcel bomb was delivered to Giwa’s home the following morning. A parcel bomb disguised as official government mail exploded in Dele Giwa’s hands, killing him and injuring his colleague Kayode Soyinka, while his assassination became a defining moment in Nigeria’s history of press freedom. Despite investigations and charges against two security officials in 1988, the case was dismissed for lack of evidence, and no one has ever been convicted for Dele Giwa’s assassination. Forty years later, the question remains, who sent the letter bomb that killed Dele Giwa? 📍 No. 25 Talabi Street, Ikeja, Lagos.
