Kenya is one country I respect a lot. Just look at the way Kenyans reacted to the government’s decision to crack down on foreign traders. Of course, there will always be exceptions, but many Kenyans disagreed with the government’s approach. Some Kenyan activists came out and spoke against it. Some Kenyans publicly questioned the decision, with some asking a very simple question: how exactly is a Burundian hawking on the streets of Kenya taking a business away from a Kenyan? We have also seen Kenyans stand up for foreign nationals who were being harassed, and there have been protests against the government’s orders. Even the government spokesperson came out and urged Kenyans to protect foreign nationals, making it clear that Kenya must not become a rogue nation and that we cannot promote xenophobia. A Kenyan police officer also reminded citizens that they cannot harass Africans, pointing to what happened in South Africa as a warning. And following all this, the government eventually gave foreign nationals 90 days to regularise their situation. We have also seen some Kenyans arrested and facing legal action over allegations of harassing and demanding money from foreign businessmen. So yes, Kenya has its challenges, and there have been disturbing incidents that must be condemned. But look at how the issue was handled. There were Kenyans who challenged the government, Kenyans who defended foreigners, and a government that ultimately put a process in place to give people time to regularise.
