@tylerandthaliag1: People always ask us how we maintain such healthy plants, and it's simple. Pruning and fertilizing. Pruning is necessary to keep the health of many plants, especially petunias. When petunias start to get leggy, the plant will spend way too much energy trying to get nutrients to the bottom of the bloom. By giving it a trim, the plant spends less energy because it doesn't have to travel as far. You will see more of a flush around the base and then outward. This results in a well, rounded plant. When to prune: you want to prune when the plant is leggy and you start to see less growth up around the base. DO NOT wait until it is completely bare around the base of the plant. By that point, even pruning might not save the plant. A simple trick is to trim along the rim of the container. This ensures you don't trim too deep. You can do a lighter trim along the top just to shape up the plant. Feed, Feed, Feed: anytime you prune, immediately followup with a water soluble fertilizer and incorporate a fertilizer into every 4-5 waterings. Have any questions? Ask away! This is something we do quite often in our greenhouses throughout the growing season. For reference, the wave petunias being trimmed in this video was planted at the end of February, so right at two months of growth.

I have two hanging baskets of petunias. They’re both super full. Am I supposed to cut them back? Will they grow full again?

I’m confused isn’t the whole point to get them leggy? Why would we trim them

Paclobutrazol drench at 3ppm when they were smaller would have prevented this..

I’m in Nebraska so I’d only have them late May to end of September. Would this apply to me too when only having them such a short time?? Maybe just 1 trim in that time? Thank you!!!

Can you share what water soluble fertilizer you recommend? I don’t want to use miracle grow. Thank you for the clear instructions in your caption. I’ve noticed in my area, Middle Tennessee, my 12” hanging baskets of petunias need to be watered sometimes twice daily because of high temps. By July they look haggard, so pruning and feeding are a must. I’ll try to do better this summer!

I don’t understand why they make a petunia like this. Why grow it to cut it?. Why not just make a mounding variety? The stores are almost sold out of everything, waves are still on the shelves. It doesn’t make sense to grow and cut.

Hello, I have petunias (surfinias) and I haven't trimmed them until now, in mid-June. Can I do the first pruning now, even though it's hot outside?
