The city, known today as Ai-Khanoum, became one of the easternmost centers of Greek culture after Alexander’s conquests. Built by the Seleucid rulers, the city featured Greek-style temples, theaters, gymnasiums, and columns—showing how far Hellenistic civilization spread into Central Asia. Archaeologists later discovered inscriptions of Greek philosophy and architecture that looked strikingly similar to cities in the Mediterranean world.
