So the video headline makes it sound like:
“Claim benefits = government gives you free tech”
…and that’s not accurate.
It’s more like:
“Some people in hardship can sometimes access limited support schemes.”
Big difference.

This is not true, we’re an organisation in UK that helps with digital inclusion, the UK government don’t help with anything, we are self funded. If we have funding available and the criteria of the funding is met we will give devices away for free. But if no funding is available we charge a small fee to cover costs. We have refurbished smart phones from £30 and refurbished Win 11 laptops from £75, if you can’t collect we charge for P&P. We have an application form that must be filled in, we also do not accept direct contact from the public you must be referred to us by an organisation who knows your living in digital poverty. Do date we’ve helped over 7000 people with a device. We are solely run by a core team of 6 volunteers, but have 22 Volunteers in total.

Some people on benefits may qualify for help getting a refurbished or free device, but it depends on circumstances, availability, and local programmes,it’s not a universal entitlement handed out to everyone on benefits.

What does exist are:
* local council schemes,
* charities,
* digital inclusion projects,
* and in some cases Jobcentre support for job searching.

This TikTok is partly true but very misleading.
There is no automatic “free laptop & tablet” benefit just because someone gets PIP or Universal Credit.
