These can be early signs of canine cognitive dysfunction, often called doggy dementia. It is a recognised neurological condition, broadly the canine equivalent of Alzheimer's in people, and it becomes more common with every year a dog ages. The changes are easy to miss because they creep in slowly: disorientation in familiar rooms, getting stuck behind furniture, broken sleep and night-time restlessness, more accidents indoors, less interest in greeting you, and rising anxiety or clinginess. It matters because this is not simply "slowing down", and it is not something your dog has to quietly endure. Pain, poor sleep, failing hearing or sight, and other illnesses can all mimic or worsen these signs, so a proper vet assessment is genuinely worth doing. Nothing cures dementia, but the right diet, supplements, a predictable routine, mental enrichment, and medication in some cases can slow the decline and help your dog feel calmer and more settled. If your older dog seems confused, anxious, or just not quite themselves, speak to your vet rather than writing it off as age. The earlier it is picked up, the more you can do to help.
