Emergency measures are being put in place because prisons are full. We got to speak about this on @This Morning last week. To give context to the conversation, it’s important to know the situation that the previous Conservative government left behind. The early release scheme was introduced as an emergency response to a severe prison overcrowding crisis, with male prisons operating at 99% capacity and projections indicating they would reach full capacity by November 2025. This is due to years of underfunding and “tough on crime” slogans without the measures to back it up. Labour have been left a terrible situation. HOWEVER. At a time that so many women are afraid of male violence, a time that sexism is on the rise - we we need assurance that men who are violent are not part of the early release scheme. Sexual violence is not a petty crime. Last year Yvette Cooper declared male violence against women a national emergency. And women are afraid. Left or right, underfunding or not, we need to stop pretending this is a “justice system” when time and time again it fails women children. Our lives will be put at risk. But more to the point, women deserve better. Overcrowding or not, we need to know that men have a deterrent and will be punished through the eyes of the law.
