Eventually, the two sides reached a peace agreement, and the Goryeo royal family established a marital alliance with the Mongol imperial family, becoming a royal son-in-law state (Bumaguk, 駙馬國) of the Yuan dynasty. As a royal son-in-law state, Goryeo preserved its royal dynasty, maintained peace with the Yuan dynasty, and retained a significant degree of internal autonomy.
