As the sun warms the frozen lake, water melts along the boundaries of the individual ice crystals, separating them into long, vertical, needle-like shards. Characteristics & Sound Appearance: When intact, the ice looks solid but is actually honeycombed and extremely weak. When broken apart, it resembles thousands of long glass candles or crystals. The Sound: One of the most unique aspects of candle ice is the distinct, high-pitched clinking or metallic chiming sound it makes when the shards hit one another, often sounding like breaking glass or wind chimes. Danger: Although it can look thick and sturdy, candle ice has almost no structural integrity.
