He didn't get rid ofnthe deficit he borrowed money. Deficit still there since income is still less than expenditure. That would be like saying I took out one loan to pay another loan therefore now I am breaking even.

Everybody in here saying he's using pensions to cover the deficit, but his approach doesn't change the retirement benefits that retirees or current employees are promised. Their pension payments are still guaranteed, as the changes primarily affect how the city manages its contributions and debt, rather than the benefits themselves.

It’s hard to say whether he can actually the balance the budget. New Yorks independant budget estimates 5bn deficit while Mamdani team estimates 0. It’ll be interesting to see what happens. He is an exceptional mayor, but he also makes very big claims
