The story of B.J. Habibie The Story of B.J. Habibie: A Genius, Patriot, and Statesman. Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie was born on 25 June 1936 in Parepare, South Sulawesi, and passed away on 11 September 2019 in Jakarta. He was a world-class engineer, a visionary technocrat, and the 3rd President of Indonesia, who led the nation through one of its most critical periods of transition. 🧒 Early Life and Education - He was the fourth of eight children. His father Alwi Abdul Jalil Habibie was an agricultural expert, and his mother R.A. Tuti Marini Puspowardojo was a devoted homemaker. From childhood, he showed extraordinary talent, especially in mathematics and physics. - When he was 14, his father passed away suddenly. His mother worked tirelessly alone to support the family and his education. After finishing high school in Bandung and studying for six months at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), he moved to RWTH Aachen University in Germany in 1955, fully funded by his mother. - He earned his engineering degree in 1960, and obtained his doctorate in Engineering with the highest distinction in 1965, specializing in light construction and aeronautical engineering. 🛫 Career in Germany and the Title "Mr. Crack" - He joined the leading aviation company Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm, and rose quickly through the ranks to become Vice President of the research and development division. - He developed the Habibie Factor, Habibie Theorem, and Habibie Method—groundbreaking theories that calculate the growth of cracks in aircraft materials. For this revolutionary work, the global aerospace community gave him the famous nickname "Mr. Crack". - At the peak of his career, with tempting offers from giants like Boeing and Airbus, he accepted President Suharto’s invitation to return to Indonesia in 1974 to serve his own country. 🇮🇩 Dedicating His Life to Indonesia - He was appointed as a special advisor, then led the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) and founded PT Dirgantara Indonesia. - He pushed hard to build Indonesia’s own strategic industries, most notably developing aircraft made entirely in the country: the CN-235 transport plane and the N-250 Gatotkaca regional passenger aircraft. - He served as Minister of Research and Technology from 1978 to 1998, and was sworn in as Vice President in March 1998. 🧭 His Presidency: A Time of Change - On 21 May 1998, he became Indonesia’s 3rd President, taking office in the middle of a severe economic crisis and the height of the reform movement. He served until 20 October 1999. - His landmark decisions: ✅ Freed the press and released political prisoners ✅ Allowed the formation of new political parties ✅ Prepared the first free and fair general election in decades for 1999 ✅ Granted the people of East Timor the right to decide their own future through a referendum held on 30 August 1999. ❤️ Personal Life and Final Years - He married Hasri Ainun Besari, his childhood friend, in 1962. They were inseparable until her passing in 2010, and had two sons: Ilham Akbar and Thareq Kemal. Their beautiful love story was made famous in the best-selling novel and film Habibie & Ainun. - After leaving office, he remained active in writing and speaking about unity, progress, and the future of Indonesia. He died at the age of 83, and was buried at Kalibata Heroes’ Cemetery, right next to Ainun’s grave. B.J. Habibie is remembered not only as a brilliant scientist but also as proof that true intelligence is meaningless without love for one’s nation. He showed the world that Indonesians can stand equal with the best, yet always keep their hearts rooted in their homeland. Would you like me to tell you more about his journey building Indonesia’s aviation industry, #fyp#BJHABIBIE#HISTORYINDONESIA#president
