Verity Guild is a Roman inspired locked room murder mystery full of political intrigued that will keep you guessing until the very end. The magic use is well done and the map and character glossary at the front were a nice touch. I referred to them a lot through my read. Dual POV, Verity Guild follows Kerasea (High Priestess) and Torren (Praetorian) who are locked in the castle of the old king along with a handful of senators and their staff where murders keep taking place. Although initially suspicious of each other due to their past, Kerasea was responsible for Torrens fathers death, they come to an uneasy alliance full of tension and yearning to try and catch the killer before they strike again. They work well together and have each others backs despite a lot of distrust between the pair. Kera and Torrens relationship is fun and I loved the way they interacted throughout and Torrens denial of his crush while obviously wanting Kera. Kera meanwhile is very open to herself about her crush but keeps her distance due to their past and her secret that she can't risk getting out. My favourite character though has to be Julian! Julian is a spoilt aristocrat and Torrens best friend. They have a way of winding each other up that feels so natural. Julian is quick to call Torren out and keep him in check where possible while he undertakes his investigation of the murders- which legally he isn't supposed to be doing. Overall thoughts- Did I enjoy it? Yes I couldn't put the book down for the most part and was hooked pretty much from the beginning. Do I think it could have benefitted from being a standalone? Also yes. But I'm not too mad about it. Although I do feel like there was plenty of time to wrap the murder mystery up and have the trial of the accused those pages were dedicated to a spicy scene with a final page plot twist so it did feel a very abrupt ending. Super excited for book 2! Rating 4.25 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ PR GIFTED Thank you to @PenguinMichaelJoseph for sending me an advanced copy of one of my most anticipated books of the year!!! @Red Tower Books #verityguild #murdermystery #fantasybooks #bookreview #maicorland
