If the guy offers to pay and he might be a potential partner it's a nice treat. If we insist we pay our half it's probably not working out or there isn't the trust there, so you don't want to owe him anything. If he asks to split the bill you'd probably get the impression it's similar and there's no connection and it's done, regardless of what he says. Personally I like a bit of give and take, so if he buys dinner you might buy tickets to something, but it just feels divided if you're splitting bills in half like two completely separate strangers. Even with a friend we might take it in turns to pay for lunch
