I'm sharing this video because a lot of people have asked why I didn't shake my teacher's hand at graduation. Rather than let other people tell the story, I wanted to explain it myself. I'm also sharing it because I hope it starts a conversation. Educators need to recognize the lasting impact they can have on the children in their care, both positive and negative. Students also deserve to know that they have autonomy. They do not owe anyone physical contact simply because someone is older, in a position of authority, or expects it. Graduation is supposed to be a celebration, but for me, walking across that stage meant finally closing the door on a six-year battle. And this was only Grade 8. Since Grade 2, I experienced bullying from both students and teachers. While bullying from classmates was painful, the treatment I received from some teachers hurt even more. Teachers are supposed to help students grow, believe in them, and create an environment where they feel safe. Instead, there were times I felt like I was being judged no matter what I did. When I finally understood a concept well enough to solve it quickly, I was accused of cheating. When I became discouraged and my grades dropped, I was made to feel like I wasn't smart enough. It felt like I couldn't win. There were many moments when it would have been easier to give up, but I didn't. I kept showing up, kept learning, and eventually reached the finish line on my own terms. When I got to the end of the stage, I chose not to shake one teacher's hand. I didn't make a scene. I didn't argue. I simply chose not to offer a gesture of appreciation to someone who had not treated me with respect. To me, a handshake is a sign of respect and gratitude. It's something you choose to give, not something you owe. I couldn't honestly offer that, and I wasn't willing to pretend otherwise. That choice wasn't about revenge or embarrassment. It was about integrity. It was my quiet way of saying,

It's something you choose to give, not something you owe. I couldn't honestly offer that, and I wasn't willing to pretend otherwise. That choice wasn't about revenge or embarrassment. It was about integrity. It was my quiet way of saying, "You no longer have power over me." I also want to thank the teachers who truly made a difference. Thank you for believing in me, encouraging me, and teaching me how to advocate for myself. I'll always be grateful for the impact you had on my life. To the educators who may read this, I hope you'll remember that the things you say and do can stay with a child for years. You have the ability to build confidence or to break it. Please choose carefully. To every student watching this: your voice matters. Your boundaries matter. Your body belongs to you. Respect should never require you to ignore your own feelings or pretend gratitude that you don't genuinely feel. If sharing this helps even one student feel empowered to set a healthy boundary, or encourages even one educator to reflect on the impact they have, then it was worth it. #StudentVoice #Boundaries #School #MentalHealth #SelfRespect
