I try to act quicker than my brain. So as soon as I think "I need to..." I get up - and can usually beat the "but I don't want to" sludge the brain makes

I am autistic and really struggle with transitions. What I find helpful is talk out loud and tell myself what the next step is, and just talk about that step, without "looking" at the next. For example "I am now going to take my clothes off. that's all. Where should I put the clothes? this one needs to go in the laundry basket, this one can be worn again do I'm just going to fold it", and keep commenting like that until I end up in the shower. Another thing I do is body doubling. and lastly, since I have timetables for everything, if I need to start "x" at 5pm, I designare transition time at 4:30, so that my brain knows that from 4:30 to 5:00 we are switching from task y to task x. So it becomes like a ritual: close all the tabs. Now turn the laptop off. Just watch it shut down. Now unplug it. Now fold the cable.... until you are eventually preparing dinner.

leave work unfinished all the time. Then get back to it. This pattern of leaving and coming back builds trust within yourself. That trust gives you energy to come back again and again. Excercise, clean, work. The task is never done, you always come back

I think it's temperature. beds cold when you first get in. cold when you get out. same with the shower. or the car. I don't like change in temperature

Might be my ADHD, but I find this problem goes away once I’m out and moving. I can get groceries after an appointment, then stop for a coffee and answer 3 emails in line. If I tried those emails from home, they’d take all day. Or I’d put off groceries for 4hrs if I had a day off. Inertia sucks! 😒

I would rather continue typing one-handed with my non-dominant hand than put my coffee down. Does this also count?

For years my routine was, get up at 4am, drive 1 hr to work, work for 12 hrs. drive back home and do it all again the next day. 6 mths. ago I got married, my husband told me to take a year off work. I thought, I have total freedom to do all the fun stuff I enjoy, skating, swimming, hikes, camping, etc. But I can barely get myself out of bed, or out of the house. Maybe I'm just exhausted, but I really want to enjoy my time off, but can't find the energy and encouragement to do it. 😭

The hardest part of getting into a gym routine is getting ready and getting there, not even the actual workout. And I’ve been doing it almost every day for 3 years and I still struggle with that transition

When I want to get out of bed, instead of imagining myself getting out of bed while staying in the bed, I switch it up: I imagine myself all snug in bed while I actually get up and go off do things. For some reason leaving behind a phantom me that was able to go on sleeping is enough for my brain to let me go my thing

In software development we call it "context switching". Productivity tends to go down the more often you switch between tasks

Since it’s sometimes hard to put down my phone when I’m procrastinating a transition, I’ll switch to listening to something on my phone so I can do that while I’m doing the next thing like getting dressed or picking up my room
