A couple of nights ago Ryan and I were watching Everybody Loves Raymond (a show I never watched but my husband loves❤️). Raymond’s mom Marie walks into the kitchen, sets down homemade pudding, and says “I made this so your kids could have something homemade,” just beaming with pride. And Debra, her daughter-in-law, smiles, says nothing, she’s just completely unfazed by the dig. So I looked at Ryan and said, oh, Debra totally gets it. Marie’s whole identity is “I am the best mother,” and in order for that to remain true in a family that’s expanding and doing things differently, she has to keep proving it. That’s why there are so many little comments about the house, parenting, and cooking. Yet Debra doesn’t let them bother her, cause she’s figured out they’re not about her. They keep Marie believing she’s the best mom. All the while Debra, sits there confident in her lived-in messy house with her store bought frosting. She’s okay with the mom and wife she is, and she lets Marie have what she needs to feel like she still matters. 🥹 But here’s what so many of us miss when we have a Marie in our lives… For some parents, being a mom was never just a role, it became their whole identity. They wrap themselves around motherhood so tightly that there’s nothing underneath it. No hobbies, no who-am-I outside of being ‘the mom.’ So when they watch you do it your own way, it doesn’t land as a different choice. It FEELS like you’re saying who they are as a person is wrong. That’s her wound. Mother-in-laws like Marie, aren’t throwing little jabs about your looks, how you keep the house, or the fact that you don’t make homemade pudding to cut you down. No, they’re doing it to protect the only proof they ever had that they mattered. Once you know the root, you can stand, like Debra, secure in the roles you play, and not take offense. This is about her fear of not being enough, of being replaced, and becoming irrelevant.
