But stepping inside felt strangely different. The building carries this atmosphere of old Singapore that’s getting harder to find today. The quiet corridors, ageing escalators and almost time capsule-like interior made it feel as though the place never fully moved on with the rest of Katong around it. Long before malls became what they are today, Odeon Katong was once part of the East’s old cinema culture alongside names like Roxy and Paradise Theatre. Back in the 60s to 80s, people would come here to catch Chinese and English films, turning this stretch of Katong into one of Singapore’s entertainment spots of its time. Today, much of the building has transformed. The upper floors are now occupied mainly by churches and community spaces, while only a handful of businesses remain downstairs. Yet somehow, that’s what makes the place even more fascinating.
