@fazli.rahmat: Sitting quietly between modern malls and newer developments in Katong sits a place many people probably walk past without thinking twice about — Odeon Katong. But stepping inside felt strangely different. The building carries this atmosphere of old Singapore that’s getting harder to find today. The quiet corridors, ageing escalators and almost time capsule-like interior made it feel as though the place never fully moved on with the rest of Katong around it. Long before malls became what they are today, Odeon Katong was once part of the East’s old cinema culture alongside names like Roxy and Paradise Theatre. Back in the 60s to 80s, people would come here to catch Chinese and English films, turning this stretch of Katong into one of Singapore’s entertainment spots of its time. Today, much of the building has transformed. The upper floors are now occupied mainly by churches and community spaces, while only a handful of businesses remain downstairs. Yet somehow, that’s what makes the place even more fascinating. In a rapidly changing Singapore where malls constantly reinvent themselves, Odeon Katong feels like a quiet reminder of a different era that still lingers in the background. A place frozen somewhere between memory and modern Singapore. #forgottenplaces #singapore #explore #hiddengems #singaporehistory

After the cinema, it was converted to a disco called Music World. The cinema seats would be replaced with bar tables and chairs. They maintained the slope. Where the screen would be, there was a stage and dance floor. I would often get drunk in the 90s. My weekly hang outs with friends.

old shopping centers are gems, nowadays the new malls are just generic and boring and some should be called a food center rather than a shopping center

First time here in 1980. Met with classmates before proceeding to cycle at East Coast park. Everything seemed almost the same when I revisted it in the early 2000s.
