Actually, the Berliner is called different all around the country! In northern/eastern Germany it’s called Pfannkuchen, while in western Germany it’s called Berliner and in southern Germany it’s called a Krapfen :)

My colleague used to get us a couple of dozens Pfannkuchen from Siebert for the entire team about twice a year -- definetly the best I ever had!

It's called Berliner everywhere in Germany except Berlin and the South, in the South it's a Krapfen. However calling it a Donut will get you strange looks everywhere, in Germany if it doesn't have a hole in the middle it's not a Donut

Most of Eastern Germany calls it a Pfannkuchen as well. The actual pancake is called Eierkuchen or Plinsen (the latter is East Central German and comes from the Slawic languages). Regional names for food really show how diverse Germany is because we will have different names for the same food like 9 out of 10 times. 😅

The truth is: it’s called Berliner Pfannkuchen was invented by a cook or baker for a party of the old Fritz so Berliner and Pfannkuchen would both be right 👌

A Pfannkuchen is puffy, an Eierkuchen is flat. Pfannkuchen are called Berliner or Krapfen in other parts of Germany. Not in or around Berlin. Your explanation is almost correct. Of course it changes because people move to Berlin and don’t give a fuck about the city. Let’s start the discussion about the Semmel now. Which is of course made up of two dough balls. And it’s definitely not a Doppelsemmel.
