A new red memorial street sign honoring an FDNY lieutenant killed in the line of duty on 9/11 was unveiled in Queens on Wednesday—the first of hundreds such tributes planned across the city in the coming weeks. The sign at 69th Lane and Eliot Avenue honors Lt. Kenneth Phelan Sr., a lifelong Maspeth resident. Phelan was a lieutenant at Engine Company 217 in Brooklyn on Sept. 11, 2001. According to officials, more than 320 green street signs honoring FDNY and NYPD personnel killed on 9/11 will be replaced with red FDNY or blue NYPD signs. Phelan’s family joined elected officials and first responders for Wednesday’s ceremony. Among those in attendance was his sister Mary Phelan-Cox, who still counts the moments her brother missed. “It does not get any easier, you learn to move on,” she said. She noted his deep ties to the neighborhood and how fitting it was a street sign now honors him where he used to shovel driveways and work as a paperboy. Phelan’s daughter, Erin, described her father as “always the man behind the scenes, he never sought recognition.” “This is such a beautiful tribute to my dad,” she said, “and it makes today even more meaningful that his grandchildren are here with us.” The remaining signs will be replaced across the five boroughs ahead of the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks this September. 🎤 Darius Radzius reports 📸 Darius Radzius, FDNY 🔊 Tune into 1010 WINS at 92.3 FM for more local news #nyc #newyorkcity #nycnews #queens #maspeth #fdny #nypd #911attacks #september11 #sept11
