@bb_fox_j: Because the fact that MC “loves” them doesn’t change the outcome #dokidokiliteratureclub #ddlc #fyp #fy

This is part of the reason why I love the secret ending, I love the fact that the girls arent in love with the mc anymore and just having fun!

yes exactly! Because even if u tell yuri/sayori u love them, they still die bc your love can’t fix all their problems

people talk about the frustration that comes with the fact that, no matter what dialogue option you choose, aka wanting to remain friends or wanting to date, sayori still dies. but that's the point! you can't just save her by becoming her romantic partner!

the biggest tragedy of the game is that these complex well thought out characters are forever stuck in a one dimensional world where they existence depends on the outside world’s affection

Wait this is so interesting keep going no but for real The way the MC acted when you tell sayori you don't like her is HORRIBLE there's no way you're going "I know what you need and what you need isn't my love but for things to be like they were before" SHE WAS ALWAYS DEPRESSED, NOW AND BEFORE, DO NOT SAY THAT THAT'S WEIRD

yeahhhh the fact that the facade of the game is a dating sim is not a thoughtless choice. it's commentary on the genre of VAs that reduce the girls to things for the player/protagonist to the point of destruction. even monika isn't immune to it. idk i have a lot of thoughts on this but haven't really gotten them together but like. yeah. it's just a really thought out game [cry] I love ddlc

people are saying “sayori couldn’t be saved with romance” but that’s also our best friend. i wish our friendship could’ve helped her

Sayori couldn’t be saved because she’s been dealing with it for so long. Love from the MC or even the friendship wasn’t going to help. Yuri was still going to be harmed because love can’t fix that. Natsuki would always end up back home with her dad at the end of the school day. Monika will forever be a sentient AI just longing for connection she’ll never get through a screen.

Looking back on DDLC since it'll turn 8 this month: It feels hypocritical to criticize the MC for "objectification" when, in the end, he is the one who is arguably the most dehumanized and treated like an object by the game's narrative. He is used as a tool to explore the meta-narrative and is denied the same empathy and attention given to the girls, a fact that many find ironic given the game's own commentary on objectification. The MC may be awkward and inexperienced, but many see him as a genuinely well-meaning and thoughtful person who tries his best to be a good friend. The "hate sink" framing often ignores his heroic deeds and the times he stands up for the girls, such as when he tries to support Sayori or acts as a voice of reason in the club. I believe that the game relies too heavily on the meta-narrative to justify the MC's lack of agency and development. Rather than exploring his trauma and giving him a proper character arc, the game simply explains away his lack of control and his suffering as a product of Monika's tampering or as a consequence of being a "player vessel". If the MC is the only character who is "stuck playing it straight" as a dating sim protagonist, the game's deconstruction of the genre is arguably flawed. By denying him the same depth and attention given to the girls, the game risks perpetuating the very tropes it aims to dismantle and reinforces the idea of him as a disposable male character. Ultimately, the argument that the MC is a "hate sink" often feels weak because his suffering is arguably the most profound and existential in the game. He is forced to witness the deaths of his friends, have his memories erased, and then is discarded by Monika when he is no longer useful as a tool for connecting with the player. In this light, viewing him as a deserving target for criticism seems to overlook the core tragedy of his character.

looking back i wish i could’ve been able to save sayori but i understand why you can’t now. ddlc is actually such a good psychological its insane. loving sayori or not loving her results in the same outcome, your love can’t just make her problems disappear.

let’s talk about how every character is so complex in many ways and how everyone plays them down to simple terms
