@shilohfarm: 3 mistakes people make when planting asparagus ❌ Instead of thinking about asparagus like a crop, you need to think of it like a tree. Because once’s established, a good asparagus crown can produce for up to 30 years! So here’s 3 mistakes to avoid in order to achieve long-term success. ❌ Planting from seeds or 1st year plants. It’s not wrong to do, but you’re going to save so much time planting crowns instead. We got ours from Keene Garlic this year and they’re already sprouted! Instead of waiting 4-5 years for a full harvest starting from seeds, we will be able to get a light harvest next year and a full harvest in year 2. ❌ Not planting deep enough. Shallow roots = spindly shoots. You want them to be at least 8 inches deep so that the crown is protected from frost and receives plenty of moisture. ❌ Harvesting too soon. Because they can last 15-30 years, it’s really important that their roots get established and the best way to do that is by providing as much energy as possible through the shoots.
