I’ve felt like a misfit and a weirdo for so many years! Understanding that there are lots of other people who exist in similar ways has made being myself far less lonely. I find more joy too- knowing that other people have the same (or equally strange) interests has allowed me to enjoy life more!

How does one obtain an assessment and, potentially if applicable, diagnosis late in life? Esp. without insurance? Honest question.

The benefits of me finding out in my mid 40’s? Well, the first 9-12 months were hell, I reexamined my entire life, trying to work out what was me, what was masking, who am I. But after that, I am now so happy, I get who I am, I know what I can do, what I can’t, I worry much less about my traits, and I’ve found the most amazing neuro spicy friends. 🥰

it's so hard when everyone you know thinks you are faking because everyone doesn't know how much effort you put into masking before

I mean I cried for like 40 min after my diagnosis appointment because I realized I’m not an Ahole (because people always tell me I’m a lot or I’m angry or rude) I’m just literal and answer questions honestly

I’m about to turn 46 I was diagnosed roughly 18months ago. For my entire life I’ve felt like a puppet or an alien that someone else is directing I’ve always felt like I just didn’t belong. I now understand myself better and am starting to appreciate and acknowledge my quirks

I knew for 20 years so it wasn't really a change it was harder back when I first started research as there was not alot directed at females and nit as much on the internet back then with I had to buy alot if books it wasn't until I finally came across a book that was just about girls with autism that it finally clicked it took me twenty years to be able to afford the cost of assessment I really hope the cost goes down for future diagnosis

I’m in my 60’s and am about to start the process. I have always felt like a square peg in a round hole. I think I will feel relief if I am told I am Autistic.

I'm 53, just been diagnosed ADHD and now going through an Autism assessment. I am mentally overwhelmed from this, on top of losing my wife to cancer last year.

I spent 30 years trying to behave in a social accepted way, then I gave up to the fact that everyone was right, I was just weird. I started to put my peace first, and then at 40 I got the diagnosis. now I am finding strength to forgive myself for trying so hard all those years, putting someone else's judgement before my needs. now I am free. and this is all thanks to my autistic child and his therapist's for opening my eyes. I am ok by myself💪🏻🥰 I am ok to be me

My challenge, discovering whole new ways I’ve been failing at masking (completely oblivious) and now working extra hard at masking those things….

doctors keep asking me whats the end goal of me keep fighting to get my 12yo dx after years of fighting. he is definitely "high functioning". but a bit complex as 2 years ago dx epilepsy so now they are digging in their heels....I never know what to say when they ask this. I also very highly likely have asd as well (ive tested very high on every self assessment quiz I can find)
