Each individual atypical mole has a very small chance of becoming melanoma; about 1 in 10,000 per year. • Severely atypical moles have a higher chance of being melanoma (~4-5%) and are usually the ones we will cut out • Most skin cancers don’t start from existing moles. About 70% of melanomas grow on skin that looked totally normal before, so it’s important to monitor your whole skin not just your moles. • People with atypical moles are about 15 times more likely to get melanoma than the average person, and that risk goes up even more if a family member has also had melanoma. • If you have a lot of moles, the best plan is regular full-body skin checks, special mole mapping photos, and learning how to check your own skin at home for any changes.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ #moles #dermatologist #melanoma

This is great advice and not enough people talk about atypical moles or Dysplastic Nevus Syndrome. My Derm talked to me about it in high school and it changed how I went in the sun! I’m now a 2X Melanoma survivor. I also am that stat where my 2nd melanoma came from an atypical. Thank you for sharing 🖤

For what it’s worth, I’ve had 7 melanomas in the last 2.5 years. 3/7 were melanoma arising in a pre-existing nevus (atypical mole).

I Apparnelty have atypical mole syndrome? I have lots of different looking moles often what skin cancers look like but they have always been like this. There all different shapes sizes and colours ect since in my teens. It’s a fear of mine and I get so anxious about it but don’t want it to stop me living my life. However this has slightly put me at ease? Never used a sun bed and always wear factor 50 when in the sun.
