Ilya brought up moving to Canada already while they were playing soccer…there is no reason for Shane to have to justify it

also in the long game, there is a conversation that neither boston nor montreal were doing well when they joined and both teams started winning because of them. so ilya going to a team that isn't doing well isn't a deal breaker for him bc he can help make it better.

I always felt it was pretty clear at this point that Ilya valued Shane over hockey. Yuna even asks him, you would leave Boston for Shane? And he immediately answers, yes. Ilya would be well aware of Ottowa’s history, and moving to be closer to Shane was most important. They needed a team that could afford him. He really needs a viable path to citizenship outside of Russia; this plan offers that possibility AND gets them closer together.

everything doesn’t need to be voiced explicitly for it to be acknowledged, ilya is the one that says he wants to switch teams preferably a canadian one, but not montreal, him saying that lets both us as the viewer/reader and shane know that ilya at this point is putting more weight on his relationship and closeness to shane than what a change in team could mean for his career

I think Ilya already decided he would have some losses. Leaving Russia behind was the most important thing.

I think the relationship was more a priority for Ilya. In the Long Game though, when the relationship doesn’t evolve the way he would like, meaning coming out together/getting married/spending more time together, this is when it starts getting heavy on him.

they were both smart enough to know that Ottawa sucks, but being in Canada was Ilyas priority. By the time Shane's plan was formulated, he'd run the numbers on every Canadian team and Ottawa made the most sense.

Canonically, both Montreal and Boston had not been doing well for quite some time before Shane and Ilya were drafted. The way they pushed each other elevated those teams. Ottawa sucking when Ilya joins is hard, but we also know he helps turn that team around too. That was always going to happen.

It really was the biggest sacrifice Ilya was willing to make. He loved Shane more than hockey he was willing to tank his career essentially. It’s insane from an outsider perspective.

Hockey is a tool Ilya uses to get what he wants in his life. For Shane, hockey IS his life.

they acknowledged it in the book, talking about how the teams they joined were not to winning teams when they joined them and THEY made them that way. Shane believes that Ilya will make any team great.

I also think that in Shane’s mind he truly believes in and admires Ilya as a hockey player so much that he thought Ilya would come in and build Ottawa up like he did Boston no problem. I much is why Shane makes the “sorry I still want to win cups” line like I think Shane saw Ottawa still being a losing team after having Ilya on it as Ilya not caring about hockey anymore because if he did Ottawa would be doing better because that’s the faith Shane has in Ilya as a player and lbr that’s how it is for Shane in Montreal. Shane is such a phenom that the rest of the team can be lacking and he can still make them win. He used to having to shoulder that weight and he doesn’t understand that it isn’t that simple so when he suggests Ottawa he maybe acknowledged internally it wasn’t a great team but he thought the fix to that was simply Ilya joining

Because it wouldn't be the first time Ilya turned an entire franchise around. It wasn't just loosing that made Ilya miserable in Ottawa. It was the hiding, the distance, and his depression. All of that would have existed even if Ottawa was a winning franchise.

Also, just because they don't discuss the ramifications of moving to Ottawa on Ilya's career in thay first middle of the night conversation, doesn't mean they don't discuss it. I know they present the plan to Ilya's parents, but at that point, it's just the start of a plan. Ilya doesn't sign with Ottawa until a full year later, during which time the two of them (and Shane's parents) talk and plan everything meticulously. Im sure they as a couple discuss all aspects of the decision at some point.

Also in episode 6, there’s a part when they’re sitting at the table with Shane and his parents and the father asks them how long they we’re going to keep everything hidden-Shane responds and the mom says “that’s sad”…Ilya looks out the window-I think he would left it all then but like you said, Ilya knew Shane wasn’t ready

I think Ilya was so desperate to not be Russian anymore. Like it’s not safe for him there at all, for many reasons( let’s not forget his brother is police there, and even though Ilya cut him off, there could still have been repercussions if he went back there, again given his brother is in law enforcement). So that and Shane were what he cared about.

yes!! Ilya mentioned Canada ("not Montreal, of course"), the WC was never an option, and aside from Ottawa there's Toronto aka Dallas Kent. Ottawa was practically the only option based on those parameters that he helped set. ppl be blaming Shane too much, this was a mutual thing!

I think salary cap was also an issue. In The Long Game when Ilya and Shane are discussing where Shane is going to play, Shane mentions that he wants to be paid what he knows he's worth. He also brings that up when discussing Ottawa with Ilya, so I'm sure he also wanted Ilya to be paid accordingly. Sometimes I really think people prefer Ilya over Shane as characters (or at the very least, relate to Ilya more) and it stops them from fully digesting events from both sides.
