I’m neither an electrician or an EE but have to work VFD’s. When a new guy asks how they work I give the same answer, “magic”. All they need to know is turn the dial this way and it goes faster, turn the dial the other way and it goes slower.

UK warships use the same engineering. 4160V ac 3ph through Supply Bridges to 5330V dc then IGBT gating to 15ph 20MW prop motors
