@bicengr: You spend 4 years learning theory related to soil mechanics, fluid mechanics, structural analysis, derivatives and when you’re first interviewed you’re asked: Can you design a road in Civil3D? Can you process data and how familiar are you with ArcGIS? Can you prepare drainage layouts? And suddenly the 4 yrs of college lead to my complete silence. Not because I wasn’t knowledgeable but because most colleges never teach the practical skills expected from the industry day 1. Today practical experience and knowledge is just as important if not more important than grades. The gap between university and industry is real and every recent graduate feels it. Engineers: What’s one practical skill you wish you learned earlier? #bicengr #civilengineering #engineeringstudent #engineerlife #corporate

I am currently a Geotechnical Engineer with a master's degree; I have now encountered the reality of the field, but what I studied for the degree wasn't the actual practice—it was just theory

This is so true likeee univ are so focused on feeding you the fundamentals to get your license that they forget to teach what you really need in the field

luckily in my school we were taught to use autocad, staad, rcdc, and midas. There were also lessons on how to construct building from the bottom up. Our capstone design project also includes things like water sewage design, high rise story building design, bridge design, dams. They also required as to make a feasibility study on why it is a problem that needed solution. We were also required to find a realife problem on a place of our choice. We were required go obtain permits and data permits for things like geotechnical report, population, demographics. After that we were required to conduct a trade off for things like the materials and framework. Then after identifying the parameters for the constraints we then moved to calculate the winning trade off after obtaing the raw data.

Simple Advise, seryosohin ang engineering subjs kahit minor pa tingin mo diyan. Quantity Surveying, Building System Design, Allied Subjects (Electrical, Mechanical, etc), Drafting, etc. Statics and Strema will get you there but these subjs will guarantee you proper jobs.

I'm currently in 4th yr po and sadly up until now di parin ako masyadong marunong gumamit ng Autocad. I don't even know how to make or read a simple floor plan. Di po kasi talaga saamin naturo sa Univ namin, like napabayaan po kami, more on solving problems talaga focus nila huhu. But I really want to master using autocad kasi like doing designs and estimations huhu. Any advice nga po kung saan ako dapat mag-umpisa huhu

I wish uni taught me about how things stand on site. Because i had to learn from carpenters, welders, concrete workers about all of that.
